Seasonal Owners Are Environmental Stewards

Ecological pressure on shoreline and surface water in the state are mounting. Overdevelopment, increased run off, climactic changes, regulatory changes, and zoning enforcement are all having a big impact on our lakes and waters. Since seasonal owners steward more than a third of the shoreline in the state, we are the primary stake holders. What environmental changes or pressures are you seeing on your lake, and what action are you taking?

Local Concerns

A number of MSRPO members have written with local concerns: special taxing districts set up to manage milfoil blooms, increasing and restrictive ordinances, waste treatment, radio tower construction, capricious enforcement of zoning ordinances to name a few. MSRPO is planning to set up regional groups to represent owners in these local issues. What are your concerns/struggles at the local level. Let's learn from each other.

Candidate Survey Results320,000 voting age cabin folks want to know

View survey results from over 50 candidates!

MSRPO, the Cabin Owner's Coalition, asked all candidates for the MN Legislature to participate in a survey. When compiled, we will share the results. There are close to 120,000 cabins or seasonal recreational parcels in the state, with roughly two-thirds owned by Minnesota residents. On average, four adults use each of these cabins.

MSRPO recognizes that each of the 320,000 voting age cabin folks will have to make their own decisions come November; and we only wish to provide them with information that they may find useful in making their choice.

Member Survey

The most powerful tool we have is the truth — good solid information about seasonal property owners in Minnesota, and the effect of the state's aggressive assessment and taxation policies. In an effort to keep our information fresh and current, please participate in the following survey on property taxes on seasonal recreational properties [such as cabins and hunting shacks] in Minnesota.

Please take 2 minutes and answer a few questions ...

Phase Out in 2009

Limited Market Value is phasing out in 2009. At that time seasonal owners will be paying property tax on the full assessed value of their property. Often the assessed value of a property is two or three times higher than the limited market value, i.e.. the current taxable value.

So that means that in 2009, an owner's tax bill could double or triple.

Check your tax bill. How much more is your current assessed value than your limited market value?
